Fisher, George

George Fisher

George Fisher was born 10 August 1888 in Belfast, Ireland. He was the oldest child of George and Jane (McGratten) Fisher of Belfast, who also had a daughter Mary. It seems that their father George passed away prior to the 1901 Ireland Census, which shows that Jane remarried with John Barry, and had an additional daughter, Sarah Jane. On 19 August 1912, George married Elizabeth and together they had 1 child, James who was three years old at the time of George’s enlistment. The family was listed as living at 67 Lord Street, Belfast Ireland.

On 7 December 1915, George enlisted with the 109th Battalion in Lindsay, and was transferred to the 38th Battalion upon arriving in England. His record shows that he also served for 2 months with the 39th Battalion prior to enlisting.

After spending 3 months attached to the 12th Brigade on a wiring party, George was sent back to the 38th Battalion just before the Battle of Vimy Ridge in April 1917. He was wounded on 9 April 1917, the first day of the offensive, receiving many serious gunshot wounds to his limbs and abdomen. He was treated at multiple field hospitals between Vimy and England before arriving at OC Military Hospital in Frensham Hill, Farnham. His war record details the serious wounds he received, and the lengthy operation that was done to try and repair the damage and save his life. George died 6 hours after the operation at 10pm on 16 April 1917.

George Fisher is buried in Belfast (Dundonald) Cemetery in County Down Ireland. He was 28 years old.
